That's 'Champion' - Twice Over in Group 1 win
TWICE OVER provided Henry Cecil with his second Group 1 winner of the campaign in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon. Go Back

Abdulla silks carried to yet another Grup 1 win today

It was a first win at the top level for the son of Observatory, who was second to New Approach in this contest twelve months ago.

Khalid Abdulla’s colt, sent off at 14/1, was settled in midfield by jockey Tom Queally as Set Sail blazed a trail in front.

Jockey Tom Queally always travelled with confidence aboard the four-year-old still who quickened up well to take it up at the head of affairs from Fame And Glory inside the final two furlongs.

The famous green colours with the pink sash were still to the fore as Twice On stayed on strongly up the Hill and Cecil's charge repelled the late challenges of Sariska and Mawatheeq to score by half a length.

It was Cecil's third victory in the prestigious mile and a quarter race after the past triumphs of Inidan Skimmer and Bosra Sham.

A delighted Cecil said of his 14/1 winner: “I think he’s a better horse than last year. He’s improved with age and has gained some confidence.

“He’s been working very well but we were slightly concerned that the ground might be a bit quick as he’s better on a softer surface.

“The Prince has been a great supporter of mine over the years so this is great and I’d like to thank him and my wife Jane."

The victory will signal the flying of the famous flag with family crest at Warren Place over the next days. Marvellous stuff...
