Now Signella's a winner!

PETER CHAPPLE-Hyam’s flying start to the year continued this afternoon as Signella recorded a gutsy victory at Lingfield.

PC-H - six of his seven runners in 2009 have made the three

Chapple-Hyam is now three wins from seven runners with only one of his horses finishing outside the first three.

It has been really encouraging for the Chapple-Hyam team with the all-weather string performing consistently well.

Signella was unable to get competitive on her debut over an inadequate 7f last back-end but the step up to 1m 2f showed her in a much better light.

The Selkirk filly was enterprisingly ridden from a wide draw by Chris Catlin, who pushed his mount to the fore after less than a furlong - and she wasn’t for passing.

Signella enjoyed herself in front and responded well when asked to lengthen away down the straight.

She stole a length and a half on them and despite some late green-ness that saw her edge right she hung on by a neck for a 22/1 victory.

The stewards held an enquiry into whether her drifting right had impeded the runner-up but the result stood.

Chapple-Hyam said: “The trip was the key. She stays well and should get further in time. She was really tough today and despite some understandable inexperience on what was only her second racecourse start she got the job done, so we’re delighted.”

Chapple-Hyam’s other winners this year have been Open Sesame and Avoir Choisi.
