Tariq and Al Qasi set for last stand

TARIQ and Al Qasi are set to have their respective final races for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam tomorrow when the pair contest the Challenge Stakes.

Tariq - three-time stakes winner

The two horses have been St Gatien stalwarts over the past four seasons and both have triumphed in Group company.

Tariq, owned by Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, went on a blazing run in the summer of 2007 as he nailed wins in the King Charles II Stakes, Jersey Stakes and Lennox Stakes.

If that Group 2 triumph marked a best winning display, the son of Kyllachy arguably topped that when third, beaten a length, in last year’s Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.

He was also a winner on his debut at two at Newmarket and was third in the 2006 Coventry Stakes.

Al Qasi - Group 3 winner

The Ziad Galadari-owned Al Qasi didn’t race as a juvenile but more than made up for it the following season as he recorded four wins.

He went on to run a series of fine races in Group company and nailed a well-deserved success in the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes.

Chapple-Hyam said: “Tariq and Al Qasi have been great servants to the yard and both have seriously good form in the book.

“During his run of three successive stakes wins in 2007 it is arguable Tariq was as good a seven-furlong horse as there was in training at that time.

“I always remember him working exceptionally on the Limekilns the week before he won the Jersey Stakes. He showed a proper turn of foot that day. He was also rated 122 by Timeform after his run in the Lockinge Stakes.

“Al Qasi has been a tough and consistent performer over six and seven furlongs and he has given us a lot of pleasure. His best Timeform figure has been 118.

“I’m hoping the ground remains good for them both tomorrow and it would be lovely if they can hit top form on their last start for me.”

Al Qasi and Tariq are sure to draw plenty of interest when they sell at Tattersalls’ Horses in Training auction later this month.
